History
The Los Pirineos estate is located on the top of the Tecapa volcano, which belongs to a volcanic mountain range in the Department of Usulután. Its name is due to the similarity of the Pyrenees in Europe, which separates France and Spain. This estate also separates two cities; Berlin (Usulután) and Santiago de María. Cultivation on the estate began in the year 1890 according to some accounts of the family and the original typical plants and shade trees called Gravileos were imported from Antigua Guatemala.
The estate has been family-owned for over 100 years and has always been shade-grown. Currently, 10% of the plantation is Typica, 83% Bourbon, 4% Pacas and 3% Pacamara.
The Tecapa Chinameca mountain range stretches from west to east across the entire department of Usulután, on the Pacific side of southern El Salvador. This mountain range is largely made up of volcanoes and is characterised by its marked contrast with the dry plains further south. The peaks rise up to 1,600 metres above sea level and offer ideal conditions for both growing and drying coffee. Despite its altitude, rainfall is minimal during the harvest period, from December to April.
Coffee cultivation has a long history in the region, but since the late 20th century it has been affected by political turmoil. The region's approximately 3,000 growers and processors produce 12% of the total Salvadoran coffee supply, primarily of the Bourbon, Pacas, Pacamara, Catisic, Cuscatleco, and Catuaí varieties. Although Usulután is responsible for a relatively small portion of national production, the Tecapa Chinameca Mountains are renowned for the quality of the coffee they produce due to their unique position near the ocean, excellent elevation, and volcanic soils rich in organic matter and nutrients.
